Welcome to the website of the South African Consulate-General in Shanghai, People's Republic of China.
Relations between South Africa and the People's Republic of China are at the level of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and rest on four pillars: Political, Government to Government, Business to Business and People to People cooperation. Across China, these relations are managed by our Embassy in Beijing with the active support of the Consulate General in Shanghai within its defined jurisdiction.
The South African Consulate-General in Shanghai is primarily an economic Mission, serving as a bridge between China's economically prosperous eastern and south-eastern sea-board region, and South Africa. The Consulate-General which is based in Shanghai is also responsible for the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shandong.
The core functions of the Consulate-General are:
- Maintaining sound Bilateral Relations in our area of jurisdiction;
- Promoting trade, investment, tourism and people to people cooperation;
- Providing civic and immigration services; and
- Providing consular services and support.

This most diversified economy on the African Continent was readmitted to be the global community of nations following its democratic dispensation on 27 April 1994. Since then, the resilient country that we are, successfully hosted world class events such as the Rugby World Cup 1995, Africa Cup of Nations 1996, World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002, Cricket World Cup 2003, FIFA Soccer World Cup 2010, The 17th World Festival of Youth and Students 2010, COP 17 in March 2012, 5th BRICS Summit in March 2013 and several other major events. In 2018, South Africa will be hosting the 10th BRICS Summit back to back with celebrating a milestone 20 Years of deepening and expanding bilateral relations with China.
