A South African citizen, who by a formal and voluntary act acquires the citizenship of another country, automatically loses his or her South African citizenship.

Please note that an application for Retention of South African
Citizenship or Exemption from the Loss of South African Citizenship may be lodged in this regard. A copy of "personbevis" in English, Form BI-529 and a copy of the South African passport to be attached when sending the Retention of South African Citizenship application.
