| South Africa’s 21st Freedom Day Celebrations in Algiers |

| On Sunday, 26 April 2015, the South African Embassy in Algeria successfully hosted South Africa’s 21st National Day Celebrations at the Sofitel Hotel in Algiers. The key note address was delivered by Ambassador Dennis T Dlomo under the theme, “Celebrating the beginning of the Third Decade of our Freedom through Accelerating Radical Economic Transformation. The Embassy also utilised this event to promote South Africa as a tourist and investment destination.” In light of the recent developments in the country, the Embassy utilised the celebrations to restate that we are Africans and government condemns the violence against our brothers and sisters from the continent. | South Africa took part in the Western Sahara International Film Festival (FISAHARA) from 28 April 2015 – 03 May 2015. The Film Festival, now in its 12th year, took place in the most remote refugee camp of Dakhla in the Sahara. The Festival was attended by 300 international participants from different countries including filmmakers, directors, human rights activists and people in solidarity with the Saharawi people. In addition, a delegation of human rights activists from the occupied territories of Western Sahara participated in the International Festival and shared their stories of occupation, oppression and repression as they struggle for self-determination and decolonization from Morocco. - South African Embassy Algiers |

| The South African Embassy in Algiers participated in African Students’ Cultural day organised by the Organisation of the Community of Foreign African Students (C.E.E.A.B) at the University Saad Dahblab in the Wilaya (province) of Blida, 50km from Algiers, Algeria. This participation was in line with the national celebrations of May, as Africa month, under the theme – “We are Africa: Opening the doors of learning and culture from Cape to Cairo” - South African Embassy Algiers |

The South African Embassy in Algiers under the leadership of Ambassador Dennis T Dlomo marked International Nelson Mandela day on Wednesday, 22 July 2015. As part of the 67 minute call to action Embassy Staff and their families refurbished the playground of the Psychological Care Centre of the National Foundation for Promotion of Health and Research Development (FOREM) in Bentalha, Algiers.
The Embassy has a relationship with the FOREM and also volunteered at the center on Mandela Day of 2013. This commitment shows that our actions are not only once of, but part of a broader commitment to make “every day a Mandela day”.
Bentalha is a village 20km outside Algiers. On the night of 22/23 September 1997 more than 400 villagers were killed by armed guerrillas as part of the bloody Algerian civil war. The children of Bentalha, who survived the massacre, are still traumatised and get counseling at the FOREM Center.
The chairman of the FOREM Foundation, Mr Mostefa Khiati said: “ I am honored that Mr Nelson Mandela came to Algeria in 1962 to receive his military training here, and today South Africans are back to assist us here at the FOREM Center with works of goodwill to the benefit of the Algerian children.”
The South Africa Embassy also took part in an International Nelson Mandela Day event that was organized by the United Nations office in Algiers, at this event a tree was planned in honour of Mandela.- South African Embassy Algiers |

I would like to thank the Presiding Officers for the opportunity to address the nation this evening. The year 2015 marks 60 years of a historic moment in our history, when South Africans from all walks of life adopted the Freedom Charter in 1955, in Kliptown, Soweto. They declared amongst other things, that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black and white, and that no government can justly claim authority unless it is based on the will of all the people. On the morning of 07 August 2014, the Staff of the South African Embassy in Algiers, their families and some Youth from the S.A.D.C Region showed their community spirit by mowing the grass, cleaning the grounds and also painting the guard rails of the Bab Ezzouar Old Age Home as part of their International Nelson Mandela Day initiative.
The Bab Ezzouar Old Age Home is Government run under the Algerian Ministry of National Solidarity, Family and Women’s Affairs. The Old Age Home houses 150 poor people of all conditions and provides them freely with shelter, good food, clothing, medication, entertainment and 24 hour all round care. The resident Social Workers provides mental, emotional and physical stimulation for the residents by arranging outings, concerts, sing-a-longs, hospital visits, and occupational therapy.
Also present at the event was Deputy Minister, Ait Saadi Belkacem and other senior members of the National Solidarity, Family and Women’s Affairs Ministry.
The Deputy Minister in his address said that he was honoured that Mandela came to Algeria in 1962 where he received his military training. The Deputy Minister added that he was glad that the South African Embassy came to the Bab Ezzouar Old Age Home with works of goodwill to the benefit of the Algerian elderly.
The South African Ambassador, Mr Joseph Kotane in his address mentioned that Nelson Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for social justice and human rights and today in marking the International Mandela Day, we together, give 67 minutes of our time to this noble campaign.
Ambassador Kotane also added that the South African Embassy in Algiers has identified the Bab Ezzouar Old Age Home to make a change in the lives of the elderly and the frail and that the Embassy has committed itself to make Bab Ezzouar Old Age Home the Embassy’s community project for the 2014 Mandela Year- SA Embassy Algiers |
