Johannesburg, South Africa

1963 : University of the Witwatersrand
BA Degree with Majors in Sociology and Afrikaans

1966 : University College of London
Diploma in International Relations

1968 : University of Sussex
MA Degree in International Relations

Career/Memberships/Positions/Other Activities

1963 : Was given a banning order, which restricted his movement
and prevented him from attending public gatherings.
During this time he was detained for short periods of time, often for violating his banning order.

1964 : Left South Africa after the Revonia trial. Lived mostly in
London, and also spent time in Angola and Zimbabwe.

1966 : Started working full-time for the ANC, developing the Anti-
Apartheid Movement in the UK and Europe.

1985 : Elected as member of the NEC of the ANC, a position he still
holds.

1990 : Returned to South Africa from exile.

1991 : Appointed Deputy Head of the ANC Department of
International Affairs.

1991-
1992 : Became a member of the National Peace Executive
Committee.

1994 : Served on the Transitional Executive Council's Sub-Council
on Foreign Affairs.

1994 : Elected Member of Parliament, appointed Deputy Minister of
Foreign Affairs.

1999 : Re-elected Member of Parliament, re-appointed Deputy
Minister of Foreign Affairs.

2004 : Re-elected Member of Parliament, re-appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs
