International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO)

HISTORY AND PRESENT STATUS

The primary aims of ICAO are to develop principles and techniques of international air navigation and to foster the planning and development of international air transport so as to ensure the safe and orderly growth of international civil aviation throughout the world.

South Africa became a member in 1947, having ratified the Chicago Convention of 1944, on 1 March 1947. Since 10 June 1994 South African has, once again, fully participated in ICAO following an executive committee decision to remove all restrictions on South Africa.

On 31 March 2003, during an extraordinary Assembly of ICAO, South Africa was elected to the ICAO Council. A Permanent Representative has been appointed by the Minister of Transport to represent South Africa on the ICAO Council and to establish a South African office at the ICAO headquarters in Montreal Canada.
