The World Conservation Union (IUCN)

Office in South Africa:

At the University of Pretoria.

HISTORY AND PRESENT STATUS

The World Conservation Union (IUCN), was established in France in 1948 as the "International Union for the Protection of Nature". The IUCN brings together states, government agencies and a diverse range of nongovernmental organisations working at field and policy levels, together with scientists and experts to protect nature.

It is able to provide a platform for neutral exchange of views and technical knowledge; and ensures that lessons learnt in one area are made available in others.

South Africa became a State Member of the IUCN on 23 July 1993. The IUCN has opened an office in South Africa during 2001. The office is situated at 8 Roper Street, Hatfield Pretoria. For more information visit the IUCN web site.

OTHER DEPARTMENTS AND COOPERATING ORGANISATIONS INVOLVED

In South Africa the IUCN has a membership base of 22 institutions, which include several Provincial Departments of Conservation and Environment, and the National Department of Environment and Tourism. The National Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism represents South Africa as a State member.

GENERAL COMMENTS

The IUCN's work is focused primarily on environmental management and conservation issues internationally and locally. The IUCN office has worked mainly by supporting the policy and implementation work for government, on a nonprofit basis.
