HISTORY AND PRESENT STATUS

The UNV programme was created by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1970. It was created to serve as an operational partner in international development, operating under the overall administration of the UNDP.

The UNV is a unique multilateral volunteer-sending organisation and has become one of the foremost suppliers of experienced professionals for governments of developing countries and for UN system agencies which assist such governments.

GENERAL COMMENTS

South Africa is benefiting from the programmes run by the UNV. Apart from the active recruitment of South Africans to serve as volunteers (an opportunity for the many jobless in South Africa), there are UN volunteers currently serving in South Africa.

Some 50% of the UN volunteers active in South Africa are South African Nationals. Unique to South Africa, international volunteers (medical doctors) in the Northern Province have identified projects with which SASVO (a national student volunteer organisation) will assist the UNV.
