relations with South Africa were established in January 1995. Ambassador Buyi
M Pheto presented her credentials to His Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk as South
Africa's Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia with residence in Bangkok on 27
June 2002. Cambodia has neither resident nor non-resident representation in South
Africa. Diplomatic Representation

is accredited to Cambodia.

Info
Tourist and visa information can be obtained from the Cambodian
Ministry of Tourism website: http://www.mot.gov.kh
An airport departure tax of US$25 per person is levied on all passengers
departing
from Phnom Penh and Siem Reap International Airports in Cambodia
for foreign
flights. This is not included in the price of the airticket.
South
African nationals visiting Cambodia are advised to maintain a high level of
personal
security at all times. Cambodia remains one of the most heavily mined countries
in the world with mined
areas frequently unmarked. Visitors are advised not
to stray off main routes in rural
areas including around temple complexes
in the north and northwest of the country.
The border area along the Thai-Cambodian
border is especially dangerous in terms of
unexploded ordnance (UXO). The
possession of even small amounts of illegal narcotic substances is illegal and
heavily punished in Cambodia.
Visa Requirements for South Africans South
African passport holders require visas to enter Cambodia. Visas can be
obtained
either at Cambodian diplomatic missions abroad or at the following
recognised
ports of entry: International Airports : Phnom Penh and Siem Reap (near
Angkor Wat)
Overland border crossings :
Cambodia-Vietnam : Bavet and Kha
Orm Sam International Check points
Cambodia-Thailand : Cham Yeam, Poi Pet and
O'Smach International Check points.
Visitors arriving by sea will have to apply
for visas before departure as visas will not
be issued on arrival.
Application
for an entry visa requires: - A completed and signed visa application
form. This can be downloaded from
the Ministry of Tourism internet website
at http://www.mot.gov.kh/visa.asp - Passport
valid for at least a further 4 months beyond the intended length of
stay; - One
recent photograph of the applicant (4 x 6);
- Appropriate visa fee; and
- Supporting
documents for business and official visas.
Visa fees : US$20 for one-month
tourist visa and US$25 for one-month business visa.
Tourist visas can be extended
only once for up to one month (single entry) at the
Immigration Department,
National Police. Business visas can be extended for longer.
Penalty fees for
overstaying of visas are US$5,00 per day.
Health
Requirements Immunisation against Hepatitis A & B is
also recommended. Malaria is a problem in non-urban areas. Denge Fever (DHT) is
also widespread. There is no immunisation against DHF. Visitors should carry their
own medication with them. It is strongly recommended that comprehensive travel
and health insurance be obtained which would include emergency air evacuation,
by a recognised carrier. Prospective travellers should check with their insurer
to make sure that their policy meets their needs. There has been a renewed
outbreak of avian influenza (bird flu) amongst poultry in
Cambodia. Visitors
to Cambodia are unlikely to be affected but should avoid places
where they
may come into contact with live poultry.

Climate
Info The climate in Cambodia is divided into three distinct
seasons, the first being the rainy, monsoon season from May to October. From November
to April is the dry season, which in turn is split into the cold season from November
to January and the hot season from February to April. For up-to-date weather

Currency
Info The currency is the Cambodian Riel (KHR). The Thai
Baht and the US dollar are widely used. Travellers cheques and credit cards may
not be accepted everywhere in Cambodia.

and Official Visits / Bilateral Meetings Following an invitation from
Prime Minister Hun Sen in October 2002, President Mbeki visited Phnom Pehn to
address the 8th ASEAN Summit on NEPAD on 5 November 2002. The President
and First Lady then paid a State Visit to Cambodia on 6 November 2002 during which
the President laid a wreath at the Independence Monument, visited the National
Museum of Cambodia and a Pediatric Hospital, held a media conference and was received
by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Cambodia for a formal welcoming reception
followed by a Royal Audience and a State Banquet. The President also received
courtesy calls from the Presidents of the Cambodian National Assembly and the
Cambodian Senate at the Royal Palace prior to the State Banquet. The State
Visit to Cambodia and the address by President Mbeki to the 8th ASEAN Summit were
very successfully concluded and both were of historic significance. It was the
first time that a foreign Head of State from outside the Asian Region has ever
addressed an ASEAN Summit. In addition, it was also the first time that a State
Visit to Cambodia was paid by a South African President.
