History of Relations

Bilateral relations between South Africa and Colombia are cordial. Diplomatic relations between South Africa and the Republic of Colombia were established in April 1994. South Africa and Colombia signed a MoU on Political Consultations in March 2015 in Bogota. The signing of this instrument was envisaged to play a significant role in providing a structure for bilateral relations between the two countries, especially considering the opportunities in both countries, e.g. trade and investment, social development and the sharing of best practices, as well as cooperation in multilateral organizations.

Since 2015, there has been lack of high level interactions between the two countries. South Africa remains commitment to strengthening relations with Colombia through the convening of the Political Consultations in the near future. Furthermore, South Africa considers Colombia as an important partner which features in achieving South-South cooperation.
