Organisations History of
Relations Djibouti gained Independence in 1977. South Africa
and the Republic of Djibouti established diplomatic relations in 1994. The First
South African non-resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Djibouti,
Ambassador Welile Nhlapo, resident in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, presented his credentials
to President Hassan Gouled Aptidon on 1 December 1997. The current South African
non-resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Djibouti is Ambassador

The Honourary Consulate of Djibouti to South Africa, was opened in 2001 comprising
the Honourary Consul, Mr Ivor Ichikowitz. South Africa gave agrément to
Djiboutian Ambassador, Mr Ahmed Issa Gabobe as Djiboutian non-resident Ambassador
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to South Africa in 1998, but he has not yet
presented his credentials.

Climate Djibouti
is extremely hot and humid in summer and has a hot winter session with little
rainfall. Temperatures from April to September can range from 43 to 45 degrees

Interest
Groups and Information Two coalition parties took part in the
2003 legislative elections, the Union for the Presidential Majority (UMP) and
the Union pour l'alternance démocratique. The UMP attained 62.7% of the
votes cast and obtained all the seats in the 65 seat National Assembly. The UMP
coalition comprises the Rassemblement Populaire pour le Progres (RPP), the Front
pour la Restauration de l'Unite et de la Democratie (FRUD), Parti National Democratique
(PND) and the Social Democratic People's Party (PPSD).
The headquarters
of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is in Djibouti. Other
members of IGAD include: Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea. |
