Organisations History of Relations South
Africa and Guyana established diplomatic relations on 4 November 1994. On 10 February
1999, South Africa's first non-resident High Commissioner, Ms T Luthuli-Gcabashe,
presented her credentials in Georgetown. Subsequent Mission visits to Guyana
have served to deepen the relationship. The Mission, in conjunction with Guyana's
Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport presented two very successful performances
by a traditional South African Zulu group. "Amabhunu" during 2002.
The Director General of the Department of Mining and Energy, Adv. Sandile Nogxina
and a South African delegation concluded a successful visit to Guyana from 24-27
March 2002. The fact-finding visit included discussions with Prime Minister (also
responsible for Energy) Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, Guyana Energy Agency,
Institute of Applied Science and Technology (University of Guyana) and the Gold
