History of Relations

South Africa and Guyana established diplomatic relations on 4 November 1994. On 10 February 1999, South Africa's first non-resident High Commissioner, Ms T Luthuli-Gcabashe, presented her credentials in Georgetown.  Subsequent Mission visits to Guyana have served to deepen the relationship.  The Mission, in conjunction with Guyana's Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport presented two very successful performances by a traditional South African Zulu group.

"Amabhunu" during 2002.  The Director General of the Department of Mining and Energy, Adv. Sandile Nogxina and a South African delegation concluded a successful visit to Guyana from 24-27 March 2002.  The fact-finding visit included discussions with Prime Minister (also responsible for Energy) Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, Guyana Energy Agency, Institute of Applied Science and Technology (University of Guyana) and the Gold and Diamond Miners Association (private miners).
