Organisations History of Relations Diplomatic relations on a non-residential basis between South Africa and Kiribati were established on 30 August 1999. The Republic of Kiribati has close relations with other small Pacific island states and with Australia and New Zealand, and has close fisheries links with Japan and the Republic of Korea. Reflecting the importance of its fishery resource, Kiribati has taken a keen interest in the development of multilateral arrangements for the conservation and management of regional fisheries.
Kiribati is a member of the Pacific Islands Forum, the South Pacific Forum and the South Pacific Commission, the Asian Development Bank, IMF, the Commonwealth and a number of UN organisations including UNESCO.
Kiribati is made up of 33 low-lying coral atolls and islands (20 of the 33 islands are inhabited) spread across the Central Pacific. Total land area is 810 sq kms with a population of around 79 000.

Health Requirements The preventative measures you need to take while travelling in the South Pacific region depend on the areas you visit and the length of time you stay. A certificate of yellow fever vaccination may be required for entry into certain of these countries if you are coming from a tropical South American or sub-Saharan African country. As needed, booster doses for tetanus-diphtheria and measles, and a one-time dose of polio for adults. Hepatitis B vaccine is now recommended for all infants and for children 11-12 years of age who did not receive the series as infants.

Climate Info Kiribati's climate is tropical, marine, hot and humid, moderated by trade winds. Typhoons can occur any time, but usually November to March. Also occasional tornadoes.
