History of Relations

The bilateral relations between South Africa and Nepal have been good since South Africa and Nepal established full diplomatic relations on 28 July 1994. The resident Nepalese Embassy in Pretoria was established on 10 February 2010. South Africa is represented in Nepal by an Honorary Consul.

Climate Info

Owing to the varied topography, the country has diverse climatic conditions. Generally, cold in the mountainous region, mild weather in the hills, and warm in the plains. Katmandu has pleasant weather with the maximum temperature ranging between 18 degrees C to 33 degrees C. In mountainous areas the average temperature ranges from 15 - 16 degrees C, while it could vary between 0 degrees C and 28 degrees C in the hills. On the plains, the average temperature varies between a minimum of 7 degrees C and a maximum of 40 degrees C.

State and Official Visits / Bilateral Meetings

The former Prime Minister Mr. Girija Prasad Koirala visited South Africa in September 1998 to participate in the XII Summit of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held in Durban.

The former Minister for Foreign Affairs Arjun Jung Badahur Singh visited South Africa in April 2002 to participate in the NAM Foreign Minister’s meeting held in Durban.

The Former King Gyanendra and Queen Komal visited South Africa on November 19-24, 2005.

The former Foreign Minister of Nepal, Mr Madhav Prasad Ghimire, visited South Africa to attend the Memorial Service in Honour of former President Nelson Mandela, on 10 December 2013.

The first Senior Officials’ level visit from the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation to Nepal since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1994, took place over the period 13 to 16 June 2012. The South African delegation was led by the Deputy Director-General: Asia and the Middle East, Dr A Sookal.

The visit by the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, Ms N Mfeketo to Nepal, from 20 to 22 August 2015, was historic since it was the first visit to this country by a South African Deputy Minister since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1994. Key to the visit, which reviewed bilateral relations, was the identification of new areas of co-operation specifically in economic diplomacy. Nepal indicated its intention to finalise an Agreement to establish a bilateral mechanism to take bilateral relations to the next level.
