History of Relations
South
Africa opened a Consulate General in Oslo in September 1988 while Norway already
had a Consulate General in Cape Town. On 1 January 1992, diplomatic relations
were upgraded to ambassadorial level.
Norway maintains excellent relations
with South Africa. It was a staunch supporter of the liberation movements during
the struggle for democracy in South Africa. Norway is also an important partner
with regard to overseas development assistance.
