History of Relations

On 16 November 1990 consular relations were concluded by way of an exchange of Notes. A South African Consulate-General was established on 1 April 1991 in Bucharest with Mr P J H Cilliers as Consul-General. In July 1991 Romania appointed Mr D Ciubotariu as Consul-General.

During Romanian Foreign Minister Nastase's visit to the RSA in November 1991 diplomatic relations were upgraded to ambassadorial level. Subsequently, Romania increased its representation in South Africa with the establishment of a Consulate General in 1993 (Cape Town), a Trade Office in 1994 (Johannesburg) and another Trade Office in 1996 (Durban).

Climate Info

Summers are long and often hot, while winters are short but cold. Rainfall is moderate (667mm per year), with most rain falling from April to July, and humidity is normally low. Average temperatures -3 C in winter and 25 C in summer.
