History of Relations

Full diplomatic relations between the former Federal Republic of Czechoslovakia and South Africa were established in October 1991. With the dissolution of the Federal Republic of Czechoslovakia, the Slovak Republic came into existence as a separate sovereign state. The bilateral diplomatic relations entered into with the Federal Republic of Czechoslovakia continued uninterrupted with the Slovak Republic. In April 2003 Slovakia signed the Treaty of Accession with the EU, on 29 March 2004 Slovakia became a member of NATO and joined the European Union on 1 May 2004. Slovakia joined the Eurozone in 2009.

October 2006 - Visit by Slovak Minister of Education (responsible for Science and Technology) to South Africa to sign Science and Technology Agreement.

June 2007 - Visit by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr NC Dlamini Zuma, to Bratislava to sign Memorandum of Understanding with Foreign Minister, Jan Kubis

November 2007 - Visit by Slovak Foreign Minister, Mr Jan Kubis to South Africa for bilateral consultations with Dr NC Dlamini Zuma and to attend UN Security Sector Reform Workshop

December 2007 - Visit by SA Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies to Bratislava to attend 2nd Session of the Joint Council for Economic Consultations.

May 2008 - Visit by Deputy President Mlambo-Ngcuka.

September 2012 - Visit by Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Ms Elizabeth Thabethe, and delegation to Slovakia for bi-annual Joint Council for Economic Cooperation (JCEC) with South Africa.
