History of Relations

South Africa established diplomatic relations with St Lucia on 12 December 1996. The island hosted the July 1998 CARICOM Heads of Government Summit, to which former President Mandela was invited. The South African President was given a hero's welcome.

On 29 March 1999, South Africa's first non-resident High Commissioner, Ms T Luthuli-Qcabashe, presented her credentials in Castries, at which time the potential of South African companies in the island's tourism construction was mentioned, as well as the prospect for cooperation in adult literacy programmes and cricket development in South Africa. Figures for trade with South Africa are minimal and are not reflected in official trade statistics - less than US$ 1 million. High Commissioner TH Chiliza presented letters of Credence to the Deputy Governor General, H E Mr Victor Gerard on 3 May 2001. In March 2003, the Government of St Lucia nominated two officials to attend the Commonwealth Local Government Conference in Pretoria.
