History
of Relations
Formal relations between Sweden and South Africa
date back to the 1930s when a South African legation was opened in Stockholm.
Relations were upgraded to ambassadorial level in 1994. Sweden strongly supported
the struggle for democracy in South Africa during the apartheid period. A South
African – Swedish Binational Commission was inaugurated in September 2000 by President
Mbeki and Prime Minister Göran Persson.
