History of
Relations
Diplomatic relations between Republic of South Africa and the Syrian Arab Republic were established on 1 June 1994. Both countries maintain resident diplomatic Missions in each other’s country, with the Syrian government having opened its Embassy in 1998 in Pretoria, South Africa.
Bilateral relations between the two countries are cordial, which was further strengthened by the visit of Former Deputy President Motlanthe to Syria in 2010. The objective of visit was to enhance bilateral political and economic relations, and to develop an enabling environment for increased trade and investment between the two countries. The then Syrian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affair, Mr Faisal Mekdad visited South Africa in 2011 and 2015 respectively.
At this stage, a number of the bilateral agreements are being negotiated, which will constitute an important framework for enhancing the bilateral relations in a way that would serve the interests of the two friendly countries and peoples.
