History of Relations

South Africa and Tajikistan established full diplomatic and consular relations on 5 May 1992. The South African Embassy in Astana is accredited on a non-residential basis to the Republic of Tajikistan.

Please note: The health care system in Tajikistan is underdeveloped in certain areas with periodic shortages of certain medical supplies.   Visitors are furthermore advised not to drink tap water. There are, during the hot season, a few pockets where malaria can occur.

Climate Info

The Republic of Tajikistan is a typical mountainous country ranging from 300 to 7495 metres above sea level.

The climate is continental. Temperatures in Tajikistan range from 50 degrees centigrade in summer to minus 50 degrees centigrade in winter. Tajikistan has the second largest water resources in CIS after Russia. The main sources of water are glaciers.

The Republic of Tajikistan is rich in lakes. Their water surface occupies 1005 sq km, which is about 1 percent of the territory of the Republic.

The vegetation is desert, steppe, mountain and meadow.

How does one reach Tajikistan?

National carrier Tajik Air and the private airline Somon Air are the country's two airlines. From Dushanbe, flights are available to numerous cities across Russia, including Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Aside from Russia, the main international destinations to/from Tajikistan are:

  • Istanbul — Turkish Airlines, Somon Air
  • Dubai/Sharjah — Somon Air, Tajik Air
  • Frankfurt — Somon Air
  • Tehran — Somon Air, Iran Aseman Airlines

Is it safe to visit Tajikistan?

Tajikistan is a safe country.  Factional fighting does however spill over from nearbouring Afghanistan from time to time.  Visitors should keep abreast of the security situation and it is suggested that the advice of the South African Embassy in Astana or other reliable sources be obtained before travelling to more remote parts of the country.
