History of Relations

South Africa established non-resident diplomatic relations with Trinidad and Tobago on 10 January 1995. Ms T Luthuli- Gcabashe, South Africa's non-resident High Commissioner, presented her credentials in Port of Spain on 4 May 1999. Minister Dullah Omar addressed a meeting of the International Criminal Court in Trinidad and Tobago in 1998 and attended the Commonwealth Law Ministers' Conference there in 1999.

Trinidad and Tobago's Ministers of Health attended a Pharmaceutical Conference in South Africa in November 1999.

In November 2001, Mr Ruphus Matibe, Deputy Director: DACST, paid a fact-finding visit to Trinidad and Tobago to explore opportunities for cultural cooperation. In May 2002, Mr Matibe accompanied a South African cultural group to Trinidad and Tobago. The opportunity was used for discussions with the then Minister of Culture, Eudine Job Davies, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture and also with the Carnival Committee. A draft Arts and Cultural Cooperation Agreement from South Africa was forwarded to the Ministry of Culture and it was further agreed that the Carnival Committee will work on a plan of action to initiate exchanges and cooperation with the establishment of a carnival in South Africa.

Visa Requirements for South Africans

Visas are required.

According to the Embassy of Trinidad and Tobago in Caracas, the requirements are as follows:

1. Tourist Visas:

Valid passport, application form, photograph, proof of sufficient funds and valid return airline ticket to South Africa.

2. Business Visas:

As above, plus a letter of invitation from the company to be visited in Trinidad and Tobago.


Health Requirements

·         Yellow fever certificate.

·         Tetanus - immunisation recommended.
