Embassy participated in Africa Day events in Madrid on 25 May 2015.

The Mission in Madrid participated in three events on 25 May 2015 related to celebrations of the Africa Day.
These included: (a) Ambassador’s delivery of keynote speech at the First International Congress of Latin American Press organized by Uhuru Africa TV, (b) Ambassador’s attendance to the 7th Diplomatic Council of Casa Africa hosted by the Spanish Foreign Ministry, as well as (c) attendance to an official cocktail reception hosted by the African Group of Ambassadors at the Hotel Miguel Ángel in the evening of 25 May 2015.

In his keynote address at the first event, Ambassador covered various aspects, including, among others, the role of the media in societies, including media’s role in the consolidation of democracies. In highlighting the importance of the Africa Day, he also shared with the meeting the programmes that South Africa would be engaged with during the month of May.

In commemorating Africa Day, the Spanish Foreign Ministry also hosted the 7th Diplomatic Council of Casa Africa where all African Ambassadors were invited. This session provided an opportunity for the robust exchange of views between the African Ambassadors and the Foreign Ministry about the increasing opportunities to collaborate at economic and political levels between Africa and Spain and between Africa and Europe.

The African Group of Ambassadors in Madrid also hosted a highly successful cocktail reception at the Hotel Miguel Ángel in the evening of 25 May 2015 where around 400 guests were in attendance.

The Spanish Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Ignacio Ybañéz Rubio was the Guest of Honour at this event, which also received a speech the Dean of African Diplomatic Corps in Spain, Mr Victor Manuel Rita da Fonseca Lima who is also the Angolan Ambassador to Spain.

The African Embassies used the event to display their national dishes, national attires, and other related promotional materials. The highly prominent South African Mission’s exhibition stand included, among others, the display of tourism paraphernalia and South African commercial products in Spain such as the Appletiser juice and Amarula liqueur as well as South African wines.
