South African Embassy in Madrid hosted a successful National Day on 16 June 2015

The South African Embassy in Madrid hosted a highly successful Freedom Day Ceremony at the InterContinental Hotel in Madrid on 16 June 2015, so as to combine with Youth Day and recognition of Armed Forces Day. During the event, speeches were delivered by Ambassador Lulama Smuts Ngonyama and by the Spanish Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ignacio Ybañéz Rubio.
In his speech, Ambassador Ngonyama underscored the fact that South Africa’s democratic political system had continued to be stable. He further emphasized business opportunities available for Spanish companies in South Africa and in the African Continent.

Deputy Minister Ignacio Ybañéz Rubio highlighted the close relations that have existed between Spain and South Africa since the first democratic elections in 1994. He further referred to his participation in the African Union Summit held in Johannesburg from 7-15 June 2015.

The speeches were followed by a presentation made by South African Airways, which included a draw of two return air tickets to South Africa from amongst the guests who were non-South African. In addition to the Diplomatic Corps, the event was attended by significant role players from the public and business sectors, civil society, education, tourism sectors, South Africans living in Spain, friends of the South African Embassy, etc.

The event also had a wine tasting session of prominent South African wines from the Lathitha Leisure Wines Company. Approximately 300 guests attended the event.

The Mission is also grateful to Echalar Fishing Company, South African Airways (offered two return air-tickets to South Africa); the Compañia Cervecera (offered Appletiser apple juice); and Comercial Masoliver (offered Amarula) for their contributions that ensured that the event was a resounding success.
