South Africa offers a combination of developed first world economic infrastructure and a growing emerging market. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 351.43 billion US dollars in 2019.  

South Africa’s competitiveness profile improved significantly in 2019. Over-all ranking South Africa improves with seven positions from 67/140 in 2018, to 60/141 nations in 2019. The coronavirus pandemic has led to a global recession, and the recovery is expected to be long and uneven.  

The GDP growth is expected to average 2.1 per cent over the medium term, although growth rates are likely to improve quickly. The economic recovery plan agreed in partnership between government, business, labour and civil society targets short-term measures to boost energy production, infrastructure investment and public employment, alongside crucial structural reforms that will raise long-term growth.  

Economic relations between South Africa and the United Republic of Tanzania have grown significantly since 1994. South Africa is a major player in the Tanzanian economy with the presence of various South African companies with the investment in of over US$600 million and it is ranked in the top 10 of the investing countries. There are over 170 SA businesses operating in Tanzania.  The notable players are SAB-Miller (trading as Tanzanian Breweries), Stellenbosch Distillers (trading as Tanzanian Distillers Limited), GAME, SIMBA Cement (PIC), Vodacom, FNB, Stanbic, ABSA (Trading as NBC), Illovo (trading as Kilimbero Sugar), Multichoice, AngloGold Ashanti (trading as Geita Gold), Metropolitan, Protea Hotel, Southern Sun and City Lodge.  

In 2019 South African exports amounted to R6.88 billion whereas imports from Tanzania amounted to R409 million. In 2020, South African exports amounted to R 5.5 billion whereas imports from Tanzania amounted to R452 million.
